Prescribing guidance

This section is intended to aid decision-making when prescribing for patients with enteral feeding tubes or with swallowing difficulties. For each drug class, it shows a recommended order of consideration when prescribing. The order shown does not indicate a clinical recommendation - prescribing decisions should only be made after a full consideration of the patient's history, including their swallowing problems, and with an understanding of the drug(s) being prescribed.

How to use this section

1. Select the button below according to whether your patient has an enteral feeding tube, or has swallowing difficulties but is taking medicines orally.

2. Expand the relevant section of the list to focus on the drug group you are interested in.

3. Consider the three options shown in the table.

Not all drugs in the class may be shown in the table, if information about how to administer them is not available in this guideline.

4. Use the links in the table to look at the individual drug monographs you are interested in.

5. If you do not find a suitable drug in the drug class table you start with, use the link above the table to step up one level in the clinical tree and see a wider range of drugs from similar classes, e.g. to move from "Loop diuretics" to the wider class of "Diuretics".
