The NEWT Guidelines is pleased to announce the development of myNEWT Guides. Over the next few months these pages will develop with the addition of myNEWT Guides for all drugs listed in the Guidelines.
myNEWT Guides are intended to support patients and carers giving medicines through enteral feeding tubes. Each guide contains step-by-step instructions for how to administer a single formulation of a medicine. The guides can be downloaded for storage on electronic and mobile devices, or printed for use at the point of medicines preparation, or for inclusion in patient records. As each guide relates to only a single formulation, some drugs will have several different guides available - for example morphine has guides for oral solution, modified-release capsules, and modified-release sachets, all of which are available in two versions; one for patients receiving doses in a feeding break, and one for those where a feeding break is not required (feeding breaks for morphine are only required when certain feeds are in use).
myNEWT Guides are not intended to provide clinical guidance or to aid decision-making regarding the best formulation to use for an individual patient. These decisions should be made by a health professional with reference to the main drug monograph in the Guidelines, where additional information is provided. Once an appropriate decision has been made, however, the myNEWT Guide which relates to the formulation can be provided to support patients and carers with a step-by-step summary of how to administer the chosen medicine.
Subscribers to The NEWT Guidelines have access to a search function here to search through all the myNEWT Guides available. The guides available for ramipril are shown here as examples:-
