Administration - NG / PEG tubes / swallowing difficulties
1st choice - Switch to insulin if appropriate.

Administration - NJ / PEJ / PEGJ tubes
1st choice - Switch to insulin if appropriate.

Acarbose is not substantially absorbed. It has its effect by inhibiting enzymes in the brush border of the small intestine.321 Due to this method of action it may not have its usual clinical effect if given directly into the jejunum, and this method of administration is not recommended.140

Clinical guidance
Due to its mechanism of action, the use of acarbose is unlikely to be appropriate in patients on continuous enteral feeding.27 Contact the patient's Nutrition team for advice.
